We experience extreme heat and are subject to drought. We have a backyard that has some full sun and some shade under fairly large trees. We also have grandchildren who come and play along with 2 dogs.

Bermuda grass hybrids are the most common warm season grasses. They survive the heat and soil conditions, as well as stand up to traffic. They do go dormant in cold weather (turn brown), and will return again when temperatures warm up. Some people just leave them dormant. Others overseed with a cool-season grass, such as rye. It depends on how much time and effort you want to put into the lawn. However, no grass will thrive in the shade under the trees, and it will be a constant battle to do something with it. You might want to consider mulching under them.
