I bought a bare root pecan tree about a month ago. I followed the planting instructions, soaked the roots over night. The tree had buds on it, but so far they have not opened, budded out. Have I done something wrong, if so, what can I do to make the buds open up and save the tree.

We can't force a tree to open its buds if it's not ready. The best thing you can do is keep the plant healthy. When you water, make sure the water soaks through the entire root zone, both deep and wide, out to the plant's canopy, or drip line. As the tree grows, expand that watering zone outwards with the tree, because that's where the roots are uptaking water and nutrients. Transplanting is a shock and plant's can react by conserving their energy. We are just at the start of the spring growing season, so as long as you are watering correctly and the root system was healthy, your tree should come along.
