Is it a good idea to sow seed very thinly right from the start to avoid the transplanting process? Will this make the plants any stronger or weaker?

How much you sow won't really affect the plants strength, as long as you thin before they develop much. If they are overly crowded, that will definately weaken them. The main purpose of sowing thickly is to ensure enough plants, as not all seeds will germinate, no matter how fresh the seed.
