I am growing grass seed in four plastic boxes using seed starter soil and four different types of water (tap, spring, treated and pond) for my 7th grade science project. I have tested each water for ph and have followed the directions on the bag of A.H. Hoffman seed starter soil for preparing the soil. They will be growing indoors at a window with indirect light. Do you have any suggestions for my project? |
My first concern is that you may not be able to see much difference between the different treatments, especially since you are only growing one pot of each. (It's usually best to have at least 2, and preferably more, pots of each different treatment,so you can see if the results you get are consistent.) There might not be very much difference in growth with the different types of water, so it will be difficult to draw conclusions. Of course, I might be wrong! One interesting idea for a futureexperiement is to give containers of grass different treatments that mimic environmental conditions. For example, spray or water one with salt water to mimic road salt, spray or water another using dilute vinegar to mimic acid rain, etc. Of course, you don't want to mix these treatments with your various types of water, or you won't know which variable caused which effect. I hope this is helpful to you! |
