Water to a depth of one foot while young, and as the tree grows in the next year increase that to two feet. Also, water should reach out past the edge of the canopy as it grows. This is where the feeder roots are located. Keep that area moist, but not wet. Avocado are particularly fussy about good drainage and don't like their roots sitting in wet soil. Once a month water very deeply to flush out accumulated salts from the root zone.
