In my experience, full sun means six hours of sun including the hour of noon. Partial sun would be anything less than that. However, for a plant that prefers full sun to partial shade, all afternoon sun may be quite adequate because that is good strong sun. For a plant that prefers shade to partial shade, morning sun may be too much in a warm climate. The definitions are anything but clear cut, they are more approximations.
