Lilacs usually have extensive root systems and are very hard to move. If you try it, do it in very early spring and take as much root as possible. Trim back the top portion to compensate for the root loss and treat the plant like a newly planted plant for until it becomes reestablished. Sometimes it is possible to take a smaller sucker from the new shoots of the season, digging up the entire shoot with as much root as you can and separating that from the main plant. This is a lot easier to do than digging up an entire established plant.
