Dormant, bare root hardy plants should be planted as soon as they are received so that they can wake up naturally with the season. Plants that are container grown and have been conditioned to the out of doors may also be planted immediately. This would apply to both clematis and lily of the valley.

Dahlias may be planted in pots and started early indoors if desired. Their tops are not frost tolerant so they would then be planted outside after all danger of frost. They may also be held and the tubers planted in the ground where they are to grow after the danger of frost has passed.
