|I have a summer home on Fire Island (NY). The ground is sandy, but trees and bushes seem to do very well. I'd like to find flowers or shrubs that are blooming between June and September. I'd also like something that will spread and grow to at least 2 feet.
|You might try the potentilla shrubs, the smaller summer blooming spireas with pink flowers, and the dwarf barberries with colored foliage. Caryopteris is a mid height plant at about three feet, blooming in blue inlate summer. Taller shrubs for summer bloom could include the rugosa roses, rose of Sharon (hardy Hibiscus syriacus) and possibly buddleia or butterfly bushes. There are many taller summer blooming perennials to consider including the salvias, echinacea or purple cone flower, upright varieties of yarrow or achillea, perovskia or Russian sage, and daylilies or hemerocallis. Annuals to consider would include cosmos, cleome, and sunflowers of various types and heights.
