I have 4 azalea bushes that are approximately 6' tall by 4' wide and have not been trimmed for at least 3 years. Do they need to be trimmed or pruned, and how do you do that? Also, when is the time to do it?

In general, these plants do not need to be trimmed much, if at all. Their natural shape is attractive; pruning would be limited to removing a broken branch, or perhaps an errant shoot would be removed. The best time for any cosmetic pruning would be in the spring right after they bloom. Broken branches can be removed immediately using a bypass hand pruner, or if necessary, a sharp pruning saw.
