In many cases, the moss can simply be scraped away. However, you might also want to run some basic soil tests and see if the the soil in the beds has become overly acidic or if some other imbalance has occurred over time. Moss often grows in compacted or poorly drained soil, or in soil that has become overly acidic and/or infertile. Your county extension should be able to help you with the soil tests and interpreting the results.
