Can I apply composted mulch directly on top of a seeded garden, if so how deep?

If you've already sown your seeds at the proper depth, wait until the seedling appear, then apply mulch around them. Adding mulch over the top of the seed bed before the seeds have sprouted will make it difficult for the seedlings to grow above the mulch before they run out of stored energy. Once the seedlings have developed one or two sets of true leaves you can add an inch or two of mulch around them to help slow water evaporation, moderate soil temperatures and suppress weeds.
