Hostas are best divided in early spring as they are coming up, or in the early fall, although they can also be divided at other times during the growing season. Dig up the clump with roots intact, then slice straight down to separate off growing shoots with roots attached to them. A sharp spade or a knife may be used, depending on the number of divisions you need to make. In my experience a chunk of hosta about six inches square will usually make a nice plant by the end of the summer.
