Tulips are normally purchased as bare bulbs in the fall and planted then, with the pointy end up and the base of the tulip about eight to ten inches below the surface. The soil should be loosened below the bulbs in addition to diggint he hole. After planting the bulbs should be watered once to settle the soil.

In spring, potted tulips may be planted in the garden at the same depth or slightly deeper than they grew in the pot. Water them well to settle the soil and keep the soil slightly moist while they become established. Allow the foliage to grow, fade, and wither fully before removing it.
