|My carrots want to grow on top of the soil (also red beets),
I've had to mound soil up and around the carrots to get any crop at all. The tap root is growing in the soil but the rest of the carrot wants to grow on top!
|Carrots do best in a very loose, deeply prepared soil that is ideally a sandy loam. You might try adding ample organic matter (digging in a twelf inch layer of compost, rotted leaves or similar materials would not be too much) and a small amount of sand to your soil to make it easier for the carrot to grow downwards. Alternatively you could consider growing them in a raised bed or in a container such as a half barrel where you can easily provide them a mix that is closer to their ideal soil type.|
