Vine Problem - Knowledgebase Question

We have vine plants in the yard that all grown (about 6 feet) and tangled around other plants. I don't know the name/type of the vine because we inheritted it from the previous owner of a house we just recently bought. The only clue I can give is that it has thorns (I don't know if it's enough).. My first reaction is just to remove the whole thing and plant new plants. But, of course, destroying is always easier than constructing. It may not in my case -- the whole 'wall'(it's growing along a fence) looks messy. The way it looks right now, shoots that close to a ground are dead and borwn, and new shoots are green and healthy on the top. Neverthless, dead or live it tangles and strangle the other bushes and trees that grow next to it. I tried to remove some shoots past weekend (04/15/2001) that were groing around a tree, and only got frustrated, because it has groun so much and it is hard to find where is a particular shoot is coming from. What would be your advice on the whole sitauation? The original purpose of it was a screen to protect a view of a private pool. thank you very much

Unfortunately, based on your description I am unable to identify the plant with any certainty. I would suggest that you consult with your county extension or with trained nursery personnel locally to obtain a definite identification of the plant to help you in deciding how to proceed -- whether or not you plan to keep it and if not, how best to get rid of it. I'm sorry I can't be more helpful.
