I have a lot unwanted woody volunteers growing up at the base of my small flowering tree. I have cut them off but they return very quickly. Is there any thing I can do to kill them without hurting my tree?

These are suckers from the root stock. They can be removed by hand as soon as they appear or with a sharp pruner. Unfortunately, some trees are more prone than others to do this.
