| how do you plant horseradish from a root somebody gave me with shoots on the bottom? do you cut shoots off and plant with the green petal down in the ground with the stock up??? |
| Space the plants 1' apart, planting 2-4 inches deep. Set it with the green shoots facing up. (Though it doesn't really matter--horseradish is very vigorous.) Because the roots can grow several feet deep, prepare the soil well by incorporating organic material like compost or aged-manure into the bed prior to planting. Horseradish needs regular watering, especially in the in the late summer and fall months, when the plants do most of their growing. Horseradish likes full sun (but will tolerate only 4 hours a day-- just produce slower and less roots) and likes at least 1" of water a week during the growing season. It's easy to keep horseradish happy-- just apply a few shovelfuls of composted manure in spring and mulch in summer to keep the soil moisture constant. Horseradish can become weedy, so many gardeners plant it in a large, deep container, then sink the container into the garden to help contain it. |
