What is recommended for Hydrangeas to produce colorful blooms? I would like to know what product to use, how to apply it and the recommended frequency of application.

Thank You

Hydrangeas do well in a rich soil that is humusy and evenly moist yet well drained. Some types of big leafed hydrangea will produce bluer flowers when grown in acid soil and pinker blooms in a more neutral to alkaline soil. The best way to know what to use is to run some basic soil tests and then fertilize or add amendments based on the results. Your UMASS extension should be able to help you with the tests and interpreting the results. In general, however, these plants respond well to a spring application of an all purpose granular fertilizer used according to the label instructions.
