Lewis Hill's popular book, "Cold Climate Gardening" (Garden Way Publishing, Pownal, VT; ISBN# 0-88266-441-7), has these hardy shrubs listed in order of their bloom time: Shadbush, Flowering Crab, Old-fashioned Lilac, Beauty Bush, Honeysuckle,Daphne, other select Lilacs, Mock Orange, Roses, Potentilla, Flowering Quince, Smokebush, Elderberry, Highbush Cranberry, PeeGee Hydrangea. Vines include (not in order of bloom) Bittersweet, some Clematis, Honeysuckle & Hops. Mr. Hill lives and writes inNorthern Vermont, which is also considered Zone 3, but you'd do well to check with your extension service (ph# 907/474-7246) before investing in any plant material. Your Zone 3 winter may be longer than Mr. Hill's, and duration of cold should be figured into the equation. Hope this helps!
