I have recently purchased a pencil cactus and was wondering what was the best way to care for it. I want to put it out by my pool and the area it will be in is sunny all day.

Pencil cactus needs extremely well-drained soil. Water thoroughly about once every two weeks in summer and once a month in winter. They take sun but full sun by the pool might be too much. If you can protect if from harsh afternoon sun that might be helpful, at least until it establishes itself.
