| Two keys to maintaining a xeriscape planting are soil preparation and mulching. Incorporate as much organic matter as you can into your beds--compost, leaves, grass clippings, well-rotted manure, etc. Organic matter provides nutrients for plants and helps the soil retain moisture. An organic mulch like wood chips also helps conserve water. For your region, some of the recommended plants for a water wise garden are Daylilies, Rudbeckia, Shasta daisies, Russian sage, Maximilian's sunflower (Helianthus maximiliani), Rosa 'Vonica', and yarrow. Some plants are quite tolerant of juglone and others are very sensitive. In your case, you can avoid plants that are sensitive, including azalea, birch, honeysuckle, hydrangea, larch, lilac, magnolia, maple, pine, potentilla, rhododendron, spruce and viburnums. I really like the book 'Xeriscape Gardening: Water Conservation for the American Landscape', by Connie Ellefson et al. (Macmillan, 1992) -- lots of "how-to" and plant recommendations.
