Can a clematis vine be divided the same way perenial flowers are? I have a very hardy, well established Jackmanii and would like to grow it in different areas of my yard.

Cleamtis seem to be sensitive to root disturbance and in my experience attempting to divide it may well kill it. An easier and less invasive way to propagate it is by layering. Bend a section down to the ground in a "U" shape, then cover the bottom of the U with soil. Hold it down with a rock if needed. In about a year, the buried section will have formed roots. This can then be separated from the mother plant and carefully transplanted.
