Birds seem to be creatures of habit, nesting in the same places year after year where they feel safe. You can try a barrier such as fishing line wrapped from hanger to basket, or scare tactics such as foil plates or lengths of ribbons that move in the breeze, or you can move the plants around your porch on a daily basis to confuse the birds and make them feel uneasy. Their nesting instinct lasts only a few weeks. By early summer you should be able to leave your plants in one place without having birds nesting in them.
