Fall is an ideal time to plant many perennials, however the plants need enough time to develop a new root system before the ground turns too cold. It would be chancy to plant now. If you find some perennials on sale that you just can't resist (I speak from experience), you can overwinter them in your garage by setting the pots inside a burlap sack and filling the sack with straw or oak leaves. Keep the pots off the floor where it's the coldest, and check them every month so you can water if necessary to keep the soil from drying out.
