Hi. I planted a Clematis thsi past fall, and it still has not come up (it is May) when all theother stuff in my yard has. I planted it underground (it came as a rootlike thing!)I live in NY, when could I expect to see at least some top growth? I am concerned it is dead and would like to plant another if it is (how would I know??)

Thanks in advance...

Sometimes a newly planted clematis will emerge very late in the spring, since it is first forming roots and then gaining strength to sprout. I think I would wait until mid June before starting to worry. The growing tip can be very brittle and fragile, so be very careful about working in the area where you planted it. To speed things up you could try gently and cautiously pulling back the mulch to allow the soil to warm a bit faster. Also make sure the soil is kept evenly moist, especially since we are having a dry spring.
