|I live in central New Jersey and have several hibiscus (Rose of Sharon) shrubs in my yard. They are starting to look like they need to be trimmed. Is it to late to trim them now or should they be trimmed in the spring?|
|There is a good rule of thumb to follow when pruning shrubs. Shrubs that bloom in spring may be pruned immediately after flowering.
Shrubs that bloom after June (often the case with Hibiscus) usually do so from buds formed on shoots that grow the same spring. Such shrubs should be pruned in very late winter/very early spring to promote vigorous shoot growth later on in the spring. My grandmother grows beautiful Rose of Sharon and as a good granddaughter, I prune hers in February.
