Azaleas require an acidic soil that is rich in humus and is evenly moist yet well drained meaning not soggy. They do not grow well in a clay soil. They should be mulched year round with several inches of organic mulch. Partial shade such as morning sun or dappled light all day is adequate. Your county extension should be able to help you run some basic soil tests and help you determine how to amend your soil to grow these plants based on the results of the tests.
