Apple trees are fertilized depending on the results of soil tests which would indicate which nutrients (if any) are needed. Your county extension should be able to help you with the tests and interpreting the results with an eye toward growing apples.

Neglected trees may require some remedial pruning as well as annual care. Annual care would usually include a general preventive spray program developed according to the prevalence of various pests and diseases in your local area as well as the known resistances/susceptibilities of the apple varieties you are growing.

Your county extension should be able to help you in determining the right level of preventive spraying and the correct timing for it each year(this usually begins in mid winter)depending on the weather and other local conditions as well as provide information about recommended pruning.

Their telephone number is 753-5077.
