Every spring my Homestead Verbena's never come back. They die after each winter. Is there any special care I should be doing so they can bloom every year?

The verbena "Homestead Purple" is not considered reliably hardy in zone 6, and will die out if grown in a location with poor drainage and will sometimes die out even in warmer areas after a winter with marked freeze thaw cycles or poor snow cover or excess cold. It seems to emerge very late in spring and should not be pruned back to clean off dead patches until the new growth is apparent. This plant gives such good performance that many gardeners are willing to overlook this problem and grow it anyway.
