I live in the Oakland hills and have a large back yard that is too steep to mow. I need a ground cover that will withstand the activity of my two dogs and can be started from seeds since the area is so large.

Vinca minor and Ajuga are both attractive and vigorous evergreen groundcovers. You can purchase and broadcast seeds of Vinca (available from Thompson & Morgan, PO Box 1308, Jackson, NJ 08527; ph# 800/274-7333), you'll get only about 50 seeds per pack. Crown Vetch makes a great flowering erosion contol groundcover, too, and bulk seed is available from Peaceful Valley Farm Supply (PO Box 2209, Grass Valley, CA 95945; ph# 916/272-4769). Another option is to try to find someone in your area who is growing Ajuga (Carpet Bugle) and ask for some plants. Ajuga will root from leaf cuttings, or leaves just stuck into the soil, and you don't need a lot of plant material to get good coverage. Hope this helps!
