Can I grow Jerusalem Artichokes about 30 miles North West of Boston without having to dig up the tubers every fall?

Sure! They grow in all zones. They're not fussy about conditions but loose, fertile soil would be appreciated. They're not often bothered by pests and disease. Freezing does not damage the tubers either. You should mulch the bed to keep the ground diggable after a hard freeze. They don't store well so you need to dig them as you want them. Just a note of warning: they can be invasive unless you are diligent about harvesting and eating them!
