Acanthus is a perennial and the leaves will remain during the winter months unless they're subjected to a hard freeze. The plants prefer light afternoon shade but can be planted in full sunshine in cool, coastal areas. Provide regular water during the summer months. Leaves can grow to 2 feet long and flower spikes usually reach 2' in height. Expect the plant to become a 3'-4' mound, topped with tall flower spikes. Clumps can be divided every few years.
