How do you get rid of wild onions in the lawn and gardens? We have millions of them!

These are tenacious weeds; since they grow from underground corms, you need to dig the corms up to eradicate the weed. In early spring, dig up and destroy the plants. Replant the hole immediately, with sod if possible.

I suggest having a soil test done. Your soil may be quite acidic--and if so you may find that applying lime to increase pH will also help reduce the wild onion population. Also, if your yard is poorly drained, this can contribute to the weed problem, so anything you can do to increase drainage may help (such as removing trees to increase sunlight, installing drainage tiles, regrading, etc.) Your local Cooperative Extension can provide you with soil test kits; the phone number is 615/898-7710.
