Fungal leaf spot frequently occurs on Photinia in Washington State. The symptoms include small red to purple spots on the leaves that soon enlarge and develop brown to grayish centers. The fruiting bodies or spores can sometimes be seen in the centers ofthe spots. Eventually the leaves drop. The disease can be spread by splashing water.

It sounds like disease may have taken hold in your plants. You might want to contact the Cooperative Extension Service (ph# 206/254-8436) about their recommendations for this problem.

To help avoid a problem in the future, make sure the photinias are planted in full sun, have good air circulation, and try to avoid overhead watering.
