What is the best way to deadhead marigolds? Do I simply pull the seed pod off or do I cut the whole stem off?

It's best to snip off the flowerhead, rather than pull so you don't damage the plant. If you don't like the look of empty stems, you can snip if off at the base. The goal is to stop the plant from expending energy on seed production and to continue putting its energy into flowering. So, it's best to snip the flower as soon as it is spent rather than after seeds have started to form.
