| Our peach tree is about 10 years old. We've been spraying fungicide. But many peaches drop prematurely. We had only two peaches left to eat last year. Hopefully we would get some more if we get advice from you. We used little fertilizer. Could it be the cause? what kind of fertilizer to use? Thanks. |
| Most fruit trees go through a natural fruit drop in early spring. This is the tree's way of eliminating fruit that has not been completely pollinated. Most peach trees are self-fertile, but it's possible your peach tree needs another peach tree for cross-pollination. Other things that can lead to fruit drop include poor pruning practices, late season chill (which can damage buds and flowers), drought stress, not enough winter chill for the variety you're growing, or the overuse of insecticides which could eliminate visiting insects. Fungicide applications will prevent or control fungal diseases, but will not help with fruit set. Most fruit trees do not require regular applications of fertilizer, unless growth is poor or leaf color is pale.
