Raised Vegetable Garden Bed - Knowledgebase Question

I am planning to build a raised vegetable garden on the southeast side of my home at a problem area smack against the house. It will be much like a retaining wall since this section is a swale type area which carries rain water off the property. Thought it would be a good idea to turn this into a dual purpose project by using it for a raised vegetable garden...have looked everywhere for information on raised vegetable gardens...dimensions etc...can't find a thing.....can you help. Everything I read on retaining walls says they should be no more than 3 feet high...could I possibly make a tiered effect? Also thought about the width....Won't be convenient if it is too wide as I wouldn't be able to reach in back. Any ideas?

length of lumber. You can also use rocks or even build the beds with bare soil sides rather than in a container. The depth of the bed is often based on the amount of material available to fill it, since the cubic yardage is rather daunting if there is a large square footage involved. Generally a mix of native soil and compost or other organic materials would be recommended. Additional amendments (eg nutrients or lime) would be added according to the results of basic soil tests.
