I have three two year old purple fountain grasses. They all grew back nicely after their first year's trimming. None grew back in their second year. Conditions are the same. Why did this happen?

Pennisetum setaceum 'Rubrum', Purple Fountain Grass, is a moderately fast growing short-lived perennial reaching about 3' high and 2'-3' wide. It's native to Africa, prefering both warm daytime and warm nighttime temperatures. The plants require excellent drainage and if water puddles around the roots the plants will die. Because they have such exacting requirements, Purple Fountain Grass is often grown as an annual. Most of them live only is 3-4 years. Hope this answers your question!
