Cannas originated in the tropics, so they like warm temperatures and plenty of rain. If your winters are mild, they can stay in the ground and will just take a rest break. If you experience cold temperatures, they need to be dug and stored. When the first frost turns the foliage black and mushy, dig the rhizomes and trim off the foliage. Pack them in dry peat moss or something similar and store them at 40-50 degrees F. In other words, keep them cool, but not cold. Replant them in spring.
