There are many hardy plants that tolerate both hot summers and cold winters, although most will have a preferred range either at the cooler end or the warmer end of the spectrum. Off the top of my head, two woody plants that are very tolerant of extremes are certain maples (eg Acer negundo, zones 2 to 9) and the hackberry (Celtis occidentalis, also zones 2 to 9). Provenance, however, can play a role in an individual plant's ability to withstand the extremes. I hope this answers your question.
