Can you tell me when a house plants needs to be transferred to a larger pot?

I have mainly ferns and ivy and they are not coping very well this winter, but I have tried everything and I am not sure if they need to be in a larger pot.

Many Thanks

Plants can do for quite a while before needing to be transferred to a larger container. Only transfer them to larger pots when they are growing well and appear to be outgrowing their container size. As a general rule of thumb a plant should reach at least three times the pot diameter before repotting.

You can also turn a plant onto its side and slide it out of the container to examine the roots. If you see lots of circling roots around the perifery of the root ball it may be a good idea to move it up into the next larger size container.
