Drip irrigation is a watering system that uses a series of graduated hoses (or pipes) to slowly deliver water individually to plants. Some variations will use emitters placed on the soil for each plant and some will use a "leaky" or permeable hose to ooze water slowly at the soil surface. It is very efficient in that there is minimal loss to evaporation. Evaporation and lack of control for where the water is delivered are the main reason sprinklers are so wasteful.
