I live close to a road and want to block off the noise and the view from the traffic. I now have a six foot fence there but it is not enough and would like to add a combination of nice looking vines, trees and shrubs for sound deadening and privacy year round. I would like to have them fast growing also. I am also thinking about planting fruits or vegetables as this is a brand new house.
|I think your idea of an edible garden is a good one! You might consider evergreen honeysuckle or evergreen clematis for along your fence, both to soften the look of the fence and to help deaden the traffic noise. From there, you might consider grapevines, kiwi, standard or semi-dwarf cherry, elderberry, mulberry, persimmon and quince trees. You'll also have good luck with nectarine, apricot, plum and pear trees in your gardening region. Vegetables grow best in full sunshine, so find the sunniest site in your yard and grow the veggies you and your family like most. You can experiment along the way, trying vegetables you've never tasted before. Most home gardeners grow tomatoes, squash, potatoes, onions, carrots, peas and beans. These are all good choices for a brand new garden. Enjoy the fruits of your labors from your new garden!|
