When should a lawn be mowed for the first time after winter?

Turfgrass doesn't need much encouragement to begin growing early in the year. Sunshine, rain, and temperatures in the mid-40's are enough to get it going. You can mow your lawn as soon as it looks as though it needs it, regardless of what the calendar says. Just make sure the ground is dry enough to walk on without squishing and the leaf blades are reasonably dry (for a clean cut). It's best to remove no more than about one-third of the length of the grass in any one mowing, so if your grass has reached 3" in height, it's time to get out the mower!
