Trying to decide between Podocarpus Gracilior or Pittosporum eugenioides (don't like Thuja))to create a tall narrow screen between homes. I was told that the Pittospoum would grow quickly (3-4 ft year) and would give me a tall and narrow screen to at least 25 ft. I am getting inconsistant info about the Podocarpus Gracilior; some say it grows slowly others say it grows as quickly as the Pittosporum. Any feedback would be appreciated. |
The conflicting information you're finding is probably due to the fact that seed grown plants grow more quickly than cutting grown plants. P. gracilior grown from seed has a slightly different growth habit - it's more apt to grow quickly, need some support to grow upright, and produce stiff, closely spaced branches along the trunk. Cutting grown P. gracilior have closely set leaves but very limber branches which are not as closely set. Cutting grown plants are reluctant to produce stong vertical growth. These have a more willowy growth habit and are especially suitable to espalier. With staking and training they will eventually assume an upright position and will make a nice hedging screen. Monrovia Podocarpus gracilior is grown from seed. Hope this information clarifies things for you! |
