I'd like some sound advice on the best way to plant bougainvilleas. I would love to have them. Clueless in California. Thanks!

I'm glad you asked! Bougainvillea roots do not knit together in a firm root ball, making them highly sensitive to disturbance, which they resent. To minimize shock when planting, cut off container bottom, then set both plant and container in prepared planting hole. Slide container up over the plant, filling in with soil as you go. Don't worry about damaging the upper part of the plant - stems are pliable and will regrow if accidently severed. Once planted, water your bougainvillea regularly in spring and moderately during bloom. Enjoy!
