There are so many different kinds of magnolias it can get confusing and it pays to be careful about names. Star Magnolia is the common name for Magnolia stellata, and "Royal Star" is a particular named variety of Magnolia stellata. According to Michael Dirr's "Manual of Woody Landscape Plants" this is one of the best selections, it blooms a bit later than the species thus affording it a bit more frost protection, has roughly double the number of flower petals, and has pink buds (opening white). It also has nice dark green foliage.
