Descanso Variety Lilac Won't Bloom - Knowledgebase Question

I purchased one of your Descanso Variety Lilacs a few years ago. It has been planted in a large container and gets full sunlight. It grows a few leaf buds during spring, but has never bloomed. The lilacs at Descanso Gardens are in full bloom right now, but my plant looks barely alive. Any suggestions?

Lilacs generally require a pronounced winter chill in order to bloom. Descanso hybrids are an exception, blooming well without a winter chill. In your mild winter climate, your choice of a Descanso hybrid was a good one! Lilacs can sometimes take 7 years to become established and mature enough to bloom. Continue to give your lilac TLC and, when it's old enough, it will bloom for you.
