Most lilacs require a pronounced winter chill in order to bloom well. In your mild winter climate, the best choice would be one of the Descanso Hybrids. They've been developed to flower abundantly in southern California. If you're looking for a lavender colored flower, try 'Lavender Lady', 'Chiffon', or 'Forrest K. Smith'. 'Sylvan Beauty' is a rose lavender, 'Blue Skies' and 'Blue Boy' are both blue, and 'White Angel' is white. Any of these suggested lilacs will perform well in your garden. Bloom will be best in full sunshine, but all will adapt to light afternoon shade.
